USEFULNESS & ADVANTAGES of OFS

UPDATE 2:

1. Line of detection – 200 km detection length.
2. Additional sensing head does NOT imply additional cost to the system.
3. Embedded in the new structures or on the surface of present structure.
4. Life long operation : more than 40 years with minimal maintenance .
5. Lightweight and compact.
6. Immunity to electromagnetic (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI).
7. Contribute significantly to the public safety by provided early warning about any failure in the structure.

NOVELTY of The Sensor System

UPDATE 1:

Simple and Low cost in installation.
Distributed sensor at multiple locations along the line of detection for about 200 km (monitoring at tunnels, damps, hills and highways).
Any additional sensor heads will not contribute to additional cost to the existing system.
Detect1st display the fault quickly and accurately, examine and repair can be made at correct location.
Can be made to be monitored 24/7 remotely and provide alarm through wireless system.

Why Optical Fiber Sensors (OFSs) is important?

WHY NEED FOR STRUCTURAL MONITORING?

Structures exposed to harsh loading scenarios and severe environmental conditions that are not foreseen during the design and construction : resulting in long-term structural deterioration

Structures : bridges, buildings, dams, roads, waterways,
hillslope, tunnels, flyovers, geo-technical sites, hillslopes.

Detect 1st Program

The sensor comprises of a length of fiber optics which is designed into a geometrical shape to give a sensing effect of structural displacement and it can be installed on the surface or embedded into the structure. The magnitude of the fault and its location can be precisely detected to within 1 meter of the detection length. This sensor is not only lightweight and compact; it is cost-effective and the fault can be monitored remotely from multiple locations along the line of detection. Additional sensor heads in the system would not contribute to additional cost to the existing system. This sensing system is capable of making an early prediction of major fault in the structure and would contribute significantly to the public safety and property. This sensing system can be made to be monitored at real-time 24/7 remotely in computers and could provide alarm through wireless system such as to mobile phones.
